Migraine, a disorder of global proportions
Let’s face it: migraine is a highly prevalent neurological condition. Epidemiological studies show that migraine affects approximately 12–15% of the population worldwide. There is increased likelihood of onset earlier in life. Although migraine widely impacts across the spectrum of demographics and age groups, it particularly strikes one of peak and prime productivity.
From a public health perspective, migraine is a devastating and leading cause of disability. According to the WHO, it is one of the top 3 disabling conditions worldwide.
Despite this, migraine remains misunderstood and is underdiagnosed, undertreated, improperly managed. This only fuels the staggering cumulative effect of universal disability. A single migraine attack can last from several hours to days, resulting in substantial functional impairment. Inadequate treatment spawns worsening and frequency of attacks, and development of chronic migraine.
Overall, migraine knows no boundaries. Awareness is key to effectively reduce disease burden, mitigate unnecessary suffering, and improve long-term outcomes. Early recognition and appropriate management make a significant difference, through and through. Let’s start with the basics.
